Strap Connector

connect your strap

You don’t have to sew on bulky d-ring tabs when creating your perfect, sleek bag. Use hardware strap connectors instead!

Strap connectors are just that: hardware to connect your straps to a bag. There are dozens and dozens of styles, shapes, types, and colors available. Some strap connectors have an integrated ring meant for connecting the swivel hook of a removable strap. Others have a wider ring meant for attaching a strap directly. Other strap connectors also function as a strap end that you can use to cover the raw end of a strap and attach it to the bag.

They are installed during the construction of the bag, since the back side of the connector is not meant to be visible. They are typically installed with a flat washer and screws, and the installation steps are similar no matter the type.

Size Matters

Strap connectors come in a large variety of sizes. You can select your strap connector based on any combination of function, shape, size, and appearance. They are typically sold in pairs, so bags with two straps will need four connectors. If you need detailed information on the dimensions of the hardware, contact your retailer.

If you opt for a strap connector meant for direct attachment of the strap, then your finished strap should be slightly narrower than the opening of the strap connector hardware. For all other styles, you want to select a shape and size that complements the shape and size of your bag.

Question: Do strap connectors need to go on the front of a bag?

Answer: No. As the maker of the bag, you decide where to put the connectors. If your bag has a single strap, you can place the connectors on the side gusset. If it’s a small wallet or clutch, you might want to place small strap connectors on the back and attach a chain strap. Structured flap bags look elegant with arch connectors on the top of the bag. It’s entirely up to you and your creativity!

Question: How much tolerance is acceptable for a good strap-to-strap connector fit?

Answer: This only matters if you are attaching the strap directly to the strap connector. A deviation up to 2mm down is perfectly acceptable for a good fit. For example, a strap that is 17mm wide will fit into a strap connector with a 19mm opening. More space will make your strap susceptible to twisting.

Question: What else should factor into selecting a strap connector?

Answer: There are no rules! As long as the combination of hardware and bag is aesthetically pleasing, use any strap connector you wish. Larger strap connectors come with a washer plate that is the same size or slightly larger than the connector. For those, you will need to make sure there is enough material surrounding all the edges of the washer plate.
