Zipper End

carry and shine

As you can tell by the name, a zipper end is hardware used to cover the end of a zipper. This way of finishing the exposed end of a zipper is sleek and adds some bling.

If you need zippered bag to open wide, you’ll want to use a zipper that is longer than the bag opening. The “tail” of the zipper will be loose and visible. For continuous coil zippers that you cut to size, using a zipper end is a must. For finished (sized) zippers, a zipper end makes the bag look polished.

Hardware zipper ends are an alternative to fabric or leather zipper tabs that are sewn onto the end of the zipper.

It is also referred to as: zipper cord end, cord end, zipper stopper

size matters

Zipper ends typically are not sold by size, but only by name. They are designed to be universally sized to fit any zipper that is folded to a pointed shape.

You will need to make sure your folded zipper fits inside the zipper end you intend to use. This means that the layers of zipper teeth and zipper tape need to fit, and the tiny set screw needs to be able to secure it in place.

A #3 pocket zipper, for example, is too small and thin for most hardware zipper ends, while a #7 metal zipper might be too thick.

Zipper ends are ideally meant to be used with #4.5 and #5 zippers.

common styles

Zipper ends most commonly come in a rectangular shape, but are also available in other shapes. They are typically narrower than the width of a zipper, so the zipper needs to be folded to a point to fit into the hardware. They secure with a tiny set screw that is only visible on the underside of the zipper.

How to apply
  1. Fold your zipper tape under the coil to create a pointed end. You can adjust the angle to your preference.
  2. Insert that folded zipper tail into the metal zipper end, ensuring the zipper tape reaches the all the way to the tip.
  3. Secure the zipper end with the included set screw. You could add a dab of glue to secure the screw even more.
  1. Use a webbing end that matches the width of your zipper tape, and, if you like, the color of your zipper coil.
  2. Slide the webbing end over the end of the zipper tape and press it slightly to secure it temporarily. You may also want to add a bit of glue inside the webbing end, but make sure it’s not so much that it squeezes out.
  3. Attach pressing plate dies to your table press. Use foam pieces or leather scraps on top of and under your zipper to prevent scratching the webbing end.
  4. Press down on the table press handle to fully clamp and secure the webbing end.
  5. Remove the zipper from between the foam pieces, and you’re done!
